Now that's a Ramp Easing

Simple Elegance

It doesn't always have to have a ton of detail and fancy moulding to look good, this
handrail system just a warm feel to it. There is not a detail but what is there works well together.

This is a nice view of the octagon newel post and some well designed balusters. I wish there was more of the stair brackets as they look attractive too.

Twisted Stair Design

A real nice Octagon newel post and Twisted rail caps start off this incredible stair design and layout. Toad Back handrail profile pretty standard for the times and a great finial turning for finish off the top of the cap

You don't see too many Level return handrails in these early stair layouts, here is one where the newel post does not match the octagon starting post.

A great view looking up through the stairwell, the tight and twisting handrail is very dramatic as it makes it way up to the 2nd floor hallway area.

Here in this view you can really see the overall stair design...note the reversed curved treads at the top of the stairs to keep the pitch the same as the rest of the stairs.

Twisted

Nice stair design, it is very popular here in the NE. A Twisted Volute starts a graceful climb up to a twisted 180° transition and up and across the upper hallway balcony.

Great view of the 2nd to 3rd stair and the twisted 180° transition of the level handrail to the upper stairs. It then wraps around the upper balcony and dies into the wall.

Beaded Octagon Newel Post

Good example of a beaded panel octagon newel post and a twisted rail cap and a nice turned cap.

In this view you can see the large amount of outward turn, this adds to a graceful twist.

Here is a view from the back side of the handrail system.

Cantilevered Stairs

Great view of a well designed staircase and handrail. The volute sure makes an impression as you walk up to the stair in both size and design. Raised panel stair brackets mimic the cantilevered treads from above and tie into the wainscoting on the walls.

In this close up , you can really start to appreciate all the detailing on the stairs and walls, it everywhere.

If one wasn't enough , they stacked another one above it just to make it that much more dramatic.

Nice Feel

Nice simple elegance is how I would describe this handrail and stair design. Recessed panels of varies sizes add just enough detail to the box newel posts

Looking down the stairwell you can pick up the dentil moulding used as trim under the newel posts caps. The handrail profile is unique but looks very comfortable to grasp on to.

A very inviting foyer with a fair amount detail, I really like the short balusters on the landing.

Stacked

Great view of the 1st to 2nd floor stairs and handrail systems , featuring octagon handrail caps , 4" wide ,mahogany handrail, custom carvings on the newel posts below the handrail.

Looking down the hallway you can see how the handrail caps transition from octagon to square as the travel from the 2nd floor up to the 3rd floor. The upper square newel posts also maintain the same carving details on the newel posts.

From the top side you can really see the large a mount of detail in this handrail system, and the amount of engineering need to design the free standing staircase.

Incredible stain glass sky light at the top of the stairwell just adds the perfect finishing touch.

The bottom detail of the newel posts continue through all the way to the 1st floor and is then built into the wall paneling detail...who thinks this stuff up....

Nice Volute

This volute is just a work of art, as it scrolls into itself, just a large amount of time and effort was put into creating this masterpiece.

In this view the size of the volute really stands out as just a massive piece, maybe 20+ balusters are installed under this monster. Overall all not an outrageous design, but just the pure size of it just  leaves a person in awe of out.

The radius balcony on the landing also adds a great tough, square rail caps on top of turned block top posts is also a design detail that is seen a lot during this period.

Twisted Volute

This twisted volute just makes such a statement in both design and first impression I felt it needed to be shared. A large amount of fall in height allows the volute to make a dramatic twist down to the volute.  Very nice

Box Posts

Very unique box post design and detailing on the handrail system. The triple inset panel is something I haven't see before and is a very nice detail.

A great close up allows you to see the amount of carvings and detail on this starting box newel post.
Think of all the hands that have grab that finial as they made there way up the stairs.

Sunburst

This stair and handrail system has a very clean and simple look at first glance, but as you study it further a great amount of detail starts to be noticed.

The stairs are not designed correctly for these 180° twisted transitions so they come out a little flat at the apex of the turn. This is caused by not placing the risers in there proper place to allow a smooth downward twisting flow.

The sunburst hardwood floor detail is incredible to see and very difficult to install. Nice close up view of the 180° transition.

180° Stairs

This well designed stair and handrail system sits at the end of the foyer as a 3rd story piece of furniture. Its smooth lines and flowing details make it very appealing to your eye and I'm sure just joy to walk up.

Great view of the highly figured quarter swan white oak treads and the deep red mahagany handrail and balusters.

The radius wainscoting just adds another degree of detail that is often seen in houses of this period.

Twisted Volutes

Nice view of the Twisted Volutes at the bottom of this both hand open stair.
The square block twisted balusters also offer a ton of detail to the stair.

Twisted 180° Transitions

A octagon newel post starting post greets you as you walk up to this very nice staircase,
also featuring a Twisted Rail Cap starting fitting to add a some flare to the entry way.

A great view looking up the balusters, Its a very nice look.
Also note the detail of the stringer as it transitions into the upper stair.

Here the 2nd floor to 3rd floor stair makes a smooth twisted transition down to the lower floor.

Nice Balusters

Octagon balusters and a really nicely detailed stair bracket are featured in this picture, just a nice view of quality craftsmanship.

Awesome Twisted Volute

Great shot of a twisted volute that just dives as it twists down to the newel post. This not a easy handrail profile either to produce such a work of art.

Some careful planning and design went into this stair layout, the baluster and stair bracket
look perfect for one another. I like the custom sizes of the balusters to get that true lines as look down the stair.

Looking up to the second floor, you can see the saddleback upeasings and square rail caps that are used on the balcony handrail overlooking the stairs
