Octagon Newel Posts

This is the first Fluted octagon newel post I have ever come across, it has a pretty appealing look to it. The Twisted Rail cap has a nice flow to it as it comes down on top of the newel posts.

Here is a good example of another octagon newel post with a octagon upper section where the handrail will die into.

Very traditional octagon newel post and handrail

Nice close up view, nice and clean looks almost brand new.

Nice mix of paint and stained materials in this picture, just a nice design and layout.

Beaded Octagon Newel Post

A nice close up view of this Beaded Panel Octagon newel post, with a Twisted Rail cap mounted on top of it. The handrail is the standard of the time "Toad Back" handrail profile gracefully flows into the Rail Cap. I also like the detail of the "Button" turning, compliments the finish look.

Side view of a "Waterfall Twist fitting" as it transitions down through the winder section at the top of the stair. These fittings are one hardest to produce and layout and machine.

Twisted Rail Cap

Here is a good example of a clean and well designed stair and handrail. The smoothed turned newel post is a interesting change from the standard octagon newel post. The balusters appeared to have purchased in just one size which is not very common for the period.

Another example of a "Waterfall Twist fitting" as it flows down from the level balcony onto the winder section of the stair. I like the large rosette at the wall.

Square Block Twisted Balusters

This is a very unique handrail system, starting with the stacked 1/4 circle starting treads returning into the large turned square block newel post. The square rail caps installed on the square block newel posts is seen from time to time and is a very attractive and adds a sense a heaviness to the entire system.

Good view of the custom turned balusters, as well the eye for detail in the sizing and block sizes. The size of the newel posts just adds a powerful look to the handrail, the twist detail is impressive too.

Twisted Volute

This is a nice example of a Twisted Volute, smooth and flowing fall ,as the the handrail descends from the 2nd floor down to the 1st floor. Invitational starting steps create a very welcoming entrance to the staircase and also gives the twisted volute a little more room to stretch out and twist.

Here is a front view and the twisted volute is very dramatic as it twists and falls down on to the volute post. Also in this view you really get to see the invitational starting steps.

Waterfall twist fitting at the top of stair drops down through the upper winder treads.

Mawley Hall

It is said that the Handrail is that of a snake, with the volute in the head of the snake and the tail can be seen in the BW picture curling up at the wall

Mawley Hall, near the picturesque Shropshire town of Cleobury Mortimer, is abuilding dating back to the 1730's. The elborate interior is said to have been designed with imagination, originality and without regard to cost.

The tail can clearly be seen here in this picture at the wall

Rail Caps

This picture is just loaded with handrailing jems, such as Saddleback Easings on the level handrail sections, Square Rail caps on top of Turned Twisted Newel Posts, Alternating baluster lay out, lastly a very interesting stair bracket design. I wish I had a picture of the lower area, but I'm sure it has a really nice twisted volute.

Tucked in 180° Circular Stair

Impressive foyer entryway with Invitational starting treads, a large octagon starting posts and just a crazy twist fitting down into the newel post cap. The stair is also free standing adding to the difficulty in building it. Just a great design for a smaller space, goes to show that it doesn't need to big and grand to be a masterpiece.

Great view looking down the stair, a how fast the handrail fall s down the stair. Nice tight little stair.

Twisted Handrails

What a dramatic entry way this is with this well designed twisted handrail on both sides, even the amount of work sizing each baluster can be appreciated.

Can deal of planning had to go into the layout with the column and the handrail coming into and out of the fluted column. The handrail and balusters dying up into the cased opening is a great detail.

I really like the look of the volutes and how they are positioned on the the starting steps, more toward the 2nd tread.

A lot of handrail going in different directions in this view.

Octagon Hollow Balusters

Nice close up of these octagon balusters with hollow cut faces, great detail and must be hard to manufacture. The stair brackets are a nice standard design with alot of detail and smooth flowing lines

Great view looking down the stairs and its easy to see the turnings flow down the stairs. The stair brackets design wrapped around the level balcony fascia.

This is a dramatic view from the entry way of the twist fittings both going up the stairs and twisting down into the lower level.
