Impressive foyer entryway with Invitational starting treads, a large octagon starting posts and just a crazy twist fitting down into the newel post cap. The stair is also free standing adding to the difficulty in building it. Just a great design for a smaller space, goes to show that it doesn't need to big and grand to be a masterpiece.
Great view looking down the stair, a how fast the handrail fall s down the stair. Nice tight little stair.
Lessons For Today...Curved stair fits into same space as straight u-stair with newel post strategically centered in hall. Different woods or finishes look great and add interesting contrasts. Someone has come along later and added base-shoe moldings here and there (which ain't kosher). Radius easing on wall-skirts were mostly non-negotiable to 19th century stair builders. Big square starting posts with sharp corners (commonly seen today) were almost never acceptable. No post/goose-neck-crap going-on at the balcony transition.
ReplyDeleteThese are things which distinguish this stair and identify it as a period piece-of-work and masterpiece.
