Nice 180 Twists

An Octagon Newel Post and Rail Cap start off this very nice handrail system as it twists and turns up 3 stories.

You can see examples of a few different twist
fittings used together to make the necessary turns to follow over the stairs and balconies.

The picture on the right is a 180 Rake to Rake twist is a combination of 2 pieces joined in the center over what looks like a 10" cylinder well hole.

The Octagon Newel Post is unique in itself
where the flat panel sides have a large cove grooved down the center of each panel.

I really like the finial turned and installed on the top of the rail cap, it adds a great touch of detail.

I like the scalloped trim under the landing tread and how it matches the stair brackets

The picture above is a great example of 2 twist fittings used to make up the transition from rake rail up to the level balcony.

The joint will be in the center of the 180 turn and the height difference is made up with both fittings.

Incredible Twisted Handrail

Incredible stair and handrail design, Both Hand Open stair will Flared and Swelled Treads. Long and flowing rails lead to matching Twisted Volutes. Balusters are turned to flow with the handrail and wrap with the volute.

Well designed staircase and bullnose allows these long flowing Twisted Volutes to be installed
creating a great entrance to this staircase .

The wide Twisted 180 Transition twists around to the upper stairs and on to the 2nd floor  hallway and balcony.

The hallway balcony gives a great view of the stairs below and the smooth graceful lines of a Twisted Handrail system.

Twisted Volutes

Nice set of Twisted Volutes, in this close up the handrail joints are visible and lets you see the different segments that make up the completed volute

Flared Stair with long Twisted Volutes

Big and Heavy Twisted Volute, I can only imagine the excitement                                                                    carrying this monster into the house for the first time.
You  couldn't help but be proud of someones accomplishment in                                                                         creating this work of art.

Octagon Newel Post

Octagon Newel Posts appear to have be the standard post of choice from 1850 through the early 1900. Most were made up in 4 sections and bolted together
with a rod down through the center.

They were available to purchase right out of a catalog with a few options in sizes and details , such as recessed panels and also upgraded with beaded panels.

The panels also appear in different shapes and sizes.

As time went on I believe the posts became more ornate and detailed and envolved into the Square Box Posts that became popular in the early 1900's.

The handrail above the newel post almost always featured a Twist Rail Cap and for a long period the Toad Back handrail profile in a few different widths.

Here looks to be a large 12" Octagon Newel Post with a Twisted Rail Cap.

Beaded Panel Octagon Newel Post

A Beaded Panel Octagon Newel Post and a Twisted Rail Cap anchor this traditional Victorian style Handrail System. The two tone finish of the newel post and handrail work very well in the example.
The handrail up through the winder section is just a work of art as it twists and turns to the 2nd floor.

The upper hallway balcony shows a large level quarter turn fitting, here you also get a good look         at the balusters and their impressive detail and size.

Twisted Rail Cap

This is a great picture showing the Twisted Rail Cap over a Paneled Octagon Newel Post as it twists and turns sharply up to the 2nd floor hallway balcony.

Nice Stairs

This is an example of a very traditional stair and handrail.

The Octagon Newel Post and Twisted Rail Cap installed over a couple flared treads offers an inviting entrance to the staircase.

The stairs also have very tasteful stair brackets installed on the open treads.

Incredible Twisted Volute installed over a "Curtail" Bullnose starting step, this detail allows the Twisted volute to decent long and smoothly and finishing on top a simple newel post

This is a good look at a Twisted Turnout from the front as you would approach the stairs. Its a just another example of a great starting detail.

Two Grand newel posts at the bottom of the the stairs make quite the statement as you                   would enter the foyer area.

Saddle Back w/ Rail Caps

This handrail system is a fine example of a few handrail details
combined together to make a very impressive entry way.

The first example is a Twisted Volute , not installed over a traditional bullnose but over a 1/4 circle starting step built off a landing.
Just goes to prove with a little design knowledge a very unique look can be achieved.

The Square Handrail Caps used together with Saddle Back balconies create a very detailed upper hallway balcony.

The balusters themselves are a work of art and combined with formal fluted newel posts just add to the grandeur of the handrail system.
