Octagon Newel Post

   Octagon Newel Posts appear to have be the standard post of choice from 1850 through the early 1900. Most were made up in 4 sections and bolted together
with a rod down through the center.

They were available to purchase right out of a catalog with a few options in sizes and details , such as recessed panels and also upgraded with beaded panels.

The panels also appear in different shapes and sizes.

As time went on I believe the posts became more ornate and detailed and envolved into the Square Box Posts that became popular in the early 1900's.

The handrail above the newel post almost always featured a Twist Rail Cap and for a long period the Toad Back handrail profile in a few different widths.

Here looks to be a large 12" Octagon Newel Post with a Twisted Rail Cap.
