As time went on I believe the posts became more ornate and detailed and envolved into the Square Box Posts that became popular in the early 1900's.
The handrail above the newel post almost always featured a Twist Rail Cap and for a long period the Toad Back handrail profile in a few different widths.
Here looks to be a large 12" Octagon Newel Post with a Twisted Rail Cap.
This is a good example of a Twisted Rail Cap and twisted handrail up to the 2nd floor.
